Hi, I’m Robin, founder of the Hoop.

stitch

The daughter of a Mexican mother and American father, I grew up in the Bronx New York. After a successful 38-year career in the fashion business, I found myself at a crossroads. I certainly wasn’t ready to retire and so I took baby steps in exploring my next adventure.

I traveled back to my childhood spent in Mexico City, stitching alongside my grandmother, mother, aunts and cousins. There we were, all together - the adults discussing the day, their lives, and the gossip. My cousins and I listened and took notes; not only fastidiously learning stitching, but life lessons, too.

This fiber has followed me on each adventure, every joy, and each disappointment and triumph … it is the one constant in my life.

Helping me sail through rough waters, my hoop has always been there. When the world outside is turbulent, my peace can be found inside the hoop. With each stitch, my troubles fade away, and I focus on the magic of creating something that didn’t exist before.

In founding The Hoop, I hope to bring together a circle of curious creators who want to explore fiber craft forms and techniques together.

Guest Artist Of the Month

Amy Burt

amy burt

Amy Burt aka ‘Lady B Embroidery’ is an embroidery artist and tutor. Amy was introduced to ‘hand sewing’ by her Granny as a child, but it wasn’t until whilst living in Berlin, Germany in her early 20’s that she rediscovered her childhood passion and began to make and sell handmade leathercraft goods.

After returning to the UK in 2014 she was accepted to be trained as an embroidery tutor at the Royal School of Needlework based at Hampton Court Palace, South West of London. She is qualified to teach over 25 different embroidery techniques; there are fewer than 40 RSN tutors around the world.

Amy takes great pride in being one of 2 tutors teaching ‘Technical Hand Embroidery’ for the RSN’s Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Degree in Hand Embroidery, partnered with the University of Creative Arts. As well as teaching for the RSN she regularly teaches private lessons at her home studio in East London and often travels around the world to teach.

Amy works as a freelance embroiderer in the British fashion industry. She frequently stitches for Alexander McQueen and worked for many years as a Senior Embroiderer at the British Haute Couture fashion house Ralph & Russo.

Her personal work includes private commissions for collectors and independent fashion designers. In 2018 her embroidery of The Young Stevie Nicks was chosen from over 20,000 pieces of art to be displayed in the Royal Academy of Arts 250th Summer Exhibition. She lives in Hackney East London with her dog Gertie.
